Brian,
I bought tons of domains myself and probably haven't used 80% of them (Pareto's princple at work?)

I think the value is in developing them because domaining has never really appealed to me.

The worst thing is to flip a domain for $200, and some guy buys it and starts making $5,000 a month from it shortly after...

I have just begun buying up multiple domain names with the idea of turning them into affiliate sites. I am all for leverage in the search engines and I wouldn't feel bad in the least for taking over the majority of the listings on the first page

That's excellent advice Andrew ... domain names are great for info sites and affiliate promotions.

(I especially love the way you use your own domains to brand your favourite products ... I don't even remember the real name of "Secret Blogging Weapon" or "Secret Affiliate Weapon").

At the same time, if someone reading this blog is broke and hasn't made a cent online yet ... they gotto remember to let go of the domains they're not using. Greedily holding on to useless domains (that sounded oh-so-cool during registration) will add several hundred dollars to the annual IM bill.

Not so long ago, I did a little house-cleaning with my domain registrar ... and I realized I had about 30 domains that I hadn't used it over 2 years (change of plans, change of directions etc). And although a part of me wanted to hold on to them for potential, future use ... I managed to come to my senses and let go.

Surprisingly, I now have the money to buy faster/more stable hosting for my next product launch.

I agree that other domain extension also works especially when most of the keywords .com might already been taken..

I also noticed that many new webmasters try to avoid domain names with hyphens but that would not affect SEO really. In addition, domain extension like .info can also achieve a high ranking in SERP.

Just to share, a good resource to generate available domain names is makewords.com.

TIPS: Another domain monetization method is to grab dropped domain names with PR and sell / develop it. However, we will have to be carefully of the fake PR stuff. You can visit odditysoftware.com to grab a list of dropped PR names =)

Thanks for the post, Andrew!

Hope it helps.
