Avast Showing “Win32:Delf-MZG [Trj]” errors? Read Here December 3, 2009

Posted by Andrew Wee in : Internet Marketing , trackback

If you’re using Avast’s Anti-Virus solution on any of your home computers, you may throwing the program is throwing up reports of your .exe files being infected by “Win32:Delf-MZG [Trj]“. This threw me for a loop, because I’m pretty careful when it comes to data mangement.

Before you start deleting .exe’s or putting them into a chest, you should know that the latest anti-virus definition update is said to contain some bugs which is causing false positives to register.

The word from those following the anti-virus industry is to avoid running Avast for now, till another definition update is released to fix this issue. Hopefully this is done in the next 24-48 hours.

PS: It might be a cause for a freakout if you see a string of trojan/malware warnings, but you are regularly backing up data on your desktop/laptop, aren’t you?

Update: Blackhatworld forum post with info on the situation.

I had this same problem, all of the sudden, and once you start moving these files to the chest then you were no longer able to access most of your programs. I finally got online with Maxthon (I could no longer use avant) and found out about this false positive problem. turned off avast and installed AVG and restored the files from avast chest now can use avant againg (after having to redownload it.) Reading on Yahoo lots of people are havingthis problem with avast right now.

I had the same problem. All of a sudden, my jing screen shot software wouldn’t work…yesterday real player seemed buggy. How do I restore the items sent to the chest. Also, on one, it wouldn’t let me restore so I deleted it… any thoughts on how should I proceed?

If you’ve moved stuff to the avast chest, you should be able to move them back.

If you deleted the file (like I did), you’d need to reinstall the software.

I have the same software installed on several computers, so I move the missing/deleted .exe files over and it works fine.

I’ve disabled/shut down the on-access scanner, so it doesn’t scan the .exe files I run and disable them.

Once a patch is released to fix this issue, I’ll re-enable it.

They’ve now released a update, which fixed the problem on my behalf.
Just update Avast, and you’ll get rid of the warnings now :-)

I’m glad Avast realized its problems and took care of it.

I was also skeptical of the “trojan”. My friend’s Skype did not work after she moved the file to chest.

Thank you for your post.

I’m doing a boot scan and I get “lrs2k4sv.exe [upx] is infected by win32:Delf.-MZG [Trj] file is in the windows folder, are you sure?”

I will cancel out of the scan based on the above posts, and see how much damage the previous deletes caused.

I’m pretty much screwed here! I kept deleting files half the system does not work now. Running in safe mode with network support just to get here.

This is a real pain… I am doing online classes and don’t have time for this nonsense. But apparently I’m going to have to reload the system if I can’t get a restore to work then figure out where all the installation files are.

I had this problem today too. Had to reinstall Windows and as soon as I installed and updated avast – it poped up again. Another reinstallation and another update took care of it. Switching to another product won’t do a lot, though, other antiviruses had those false alarm problems in the past.
To err is human, but if you really want to screw everything up – this requires a computer. :-)

Same thing here.. Spent the better part of a day checking & double checking… Then, reinstalling… Then, triple checking…lol Oh well… Let’s call this one a training op!

avast Antrivirus felrapporterar Delf-MZG…

I guess it triggered the warning for anything written in Borland/CodeGear Delphi – at least all my Delphi compiled projects were false positives. Skype is also written in Delphi, so chances are good this is the common factor.

Me too! I was just surfing alone when avast! popped up a message saying I’d been infected. When I rebooted the computer it went through the welcome screen as normal (Windows XP), then on to the desktop. At that point it was obvious something was wrong. Clicking on desktop icons, nothing happened. Clicking on the Start button, nothing happened. Hover the mouse over the Start button, the hourglass icon came up, then nothing happened. I couldn’t use the computer!

Rebooted in Safe Mode, ran avast! and did a thorough scan. It showed this “Trojan” in every .exe file of programs I had installed. It even showed the “Trojan” in .exe files of software that I had just laying around: programs I’d downloaded but not yet installed!

I panicked at that point, assuming to have been under a massive infection. Formatted both hard drives, repartartioned them, and made a fresh XP installation. Fortunately I’d backed up my data a week or so earlier, so the data loss was not *too* painful. But it was a damn inconvenience because I’ve spent the better part of a day getting the computer back to the way I’d had it before this incident.

I like avast! so I’ll forgive them for this error. But I’m now running with Rising Antivirus, just to be on the safe side – hopefully!

Help! My friend is having the same problem and would like to re-install Avast now that the update is available, but can’t get on the internet. What should she do?

I vote for The Changeling with George C. Scott. Another one: See No Evil with Mia Farrow really scared the heck out of me as a kid. I also like Ghost Story based on the Peter Straub book, but its more creepy than scary.
