I agree with the first mover advantage theory though; it’s probably a hit-or-miss thing because if you’re gonna be a first mover you must be trying out something that’s not been tested out nearly enough yet.

Demand Media’s strategy is a lot like the “SEO Empire” strategy that Eli was pushing a few years ago; Demand Media’s strategy is a bit more modern, I think, with more of a social media focus.

The really useful insight they’ve got is that advertising rates are a matter of supply vs. demand; ads are worthless on programming and SEO blogs because there are just so many of them. People who “follow their passion” on line will probably follow a passion that’s already over-followed on the internet, so no wonder they get 10 cents eCPM.

Pick a random topic out of the thesaurus, however, and your odds improve… If you’re really systematic you can do even better.
